“The more you practice the art of thankfulness, the more you have to be thankful for.” – Norman Vincent Peale
I know it’s thanksgiving season and though in Kenya we don’t have the turkey dinner traditions and going around the dinner table saying what we are thankful for doesn’t mean we can’t take this time to reflect on the year thus far and take a moment to be thankful.
Gratitude journal-ing has been a game changer for me.I started it last January.
I had gone through this stage of depression, and I just felt like I didn’t know what was happening. I would wake up some mornings in the fetal position feeling lost and unmotivated to do anything.When I started gratitude journal-ing I was very vague in the beginning because I just didn’t know what to write.
I remember waking up the first day and just writing,”I am grateful for clean water to drink.”
I was so down that finding anything to be grateful for felt like a scavenger hunt! It is a real struggle especially when you feel like you are drowning and can’t see past the water chocking you…
But the beauty of this simple exercise is that it taught me how to look for the silver lining in each dark cloud. It taught me more importantly to be grateful for the things I took for granted…to be more intentional in being grateful…
Cultivating this habit gave me a new perspective and outlook on life and I appreciated even the most mundane things in life…the more grateful I am the more beauty I see.
Call me a late bloomer, but it was a reality I never thought of before…
There are so many things to be grateful for;
The air we breathe,the roof over your head, the food on the table, the peace in our country you name it….these things may not be directly related to what you want at the moment but being grateful for these seemingly small things reminds you that it could be worse.
There is no one in so dire a strait they can’t manage to be thankful for something.
Plug “famine in Turkana” “war in Syria” into google,click on “images” and then give thanks.
You get the idea.Anything else you feel like being grateful for.You get to decide what’s worth living for.
As the year ends give yourself the gift of developing an attitude for gratitude.Or atleast a step towards it.
When God sees that you appreciate your NOW,He starts to release your next…
